Dr. Constantinos P. Constantinou

Costas Constantinou is an Associate Professor of Science Education at the University of Cyprus and the Director of the Learning in Science Group.  He has a Ph.D. in Physics from Cambridge University and has worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Washington State University and as a visiting professor at the University of Washington.  Dr. Constantinou is a member of the Working Group D: Increasing Participation in Mathematics, Science and Technology (DG Education and Culture). He is also a member of the High Level Expert Group on Increasing Human Resources for Science and Technology in Europe (DG Research). Among others, he is on the editorial board of Educational Research Review.  He has extensive experience in coordinating local and international research programs involving the development and research validation of curriculum materials for various topics in science. He has also served as a scientific coordinator for the research projects STOCHASMOS and SYNERGASIA, which involve the design of a platform for the organization of web-based inquiry-oriented learning environments and the evaluation of the potential of this platform and the various tools it provides.

Kalypso Iordanou is a postdoctoral fellow in the Learning in Science group in the University of Cyprus. She received a Ph.D. in Cognitive Studies in Education from Columbia University in New York in 2008, a Master of Philosophy from Columbia University in 2007, a Master of Education in Applied Educational Psychology: Cognitive, Behavioral, and Developmental Analysis from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 2005 and a BA in Education with specialization in psychology from the University of Cyprus in 2001. Kalypso received a full Fulbright Graduate Scholarship, the Theodore & Wally Lappas Award (2005, 2006 & 2007) and the Teachers College General and International scholarships. She has taught in the department of Psychology at the University of Cyprus as a Special Scientist and worked as a Research and Teaching Assistant during her graduate studies. Her research interests include the development of argument skills and epistemological understanding in the science and social domains (Iordanou, K., & Kuhn, D. (forthcoming). Arguing on the computer in scientific and non-scientific domains; Kuhn, D., Goh, W., Iordanou, K., & Shaenfield, D. (in press). Arguing on the Computer: A Microgenetic Study of Developing Argument Skills in a Computer-Supported Environment. Child Development).

 Kalypso’s interest in the CoReflect is in examining the development of students’ argumentation skills in a socioscientific topic using the platform of STOCHASMOS.

Georgia is a researcher and a Master's student with the Learning in Science Group at the University of Cyprus. She completed her undergraduate studies in elementary education from the University of Cyprus in June 2005 and has worked for the research projects aiming at the development of the STOCHASMOS platform and seeking to understand how different technological features can scaffold science learning.  Georgia has developed a data-rich inquiry environment in the platform through which she will study students' understanding of the nature of science.

Andreani  is a Biology  Teacher in Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education in Cyprus. She has a Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Leipzig, Germany (1981), a Master of Science (M.Sc) in Clinical Biochemistry, from the University of Leipzig, Germany (1982), a Postgraduate  in Virology from the University of  Wageningen, The Netherlands (1984), and a Magister Artium in Learning in Natural Sciences from the University of Cyprus, Cyprus (2007). She is a Doctoral  Candidate in Learning in Natural Sciences at the University of Cyprus. Since1996, she was been working at  the Ministry of Education and Culture as a Biology teacher in Secondary Education. Since 2007, she works at the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute as a teacher trainer.

Her research interests among others include: Biology Curriculum in Secondary Education, web–based  inquiry learning environments and the development of scientific thinking.

Maria Loi

Maria Loi is a head teacher in a primary school in Cyprus. She has a master’s degree in Science Education from King’s College in London, with a concentration in conceptual learning and teachers’ education. She obtained her BEd (hors) from the University of North London, with a focus in science learning. She also has a Teacher’s Diploma, from the Pedagogical Academy of Cyprus. She has been the co-coordinator of a Comenius project on “Teaching science and mathematics in a creative way” and the coordinator of the Grundtvig project “WARM”.  She has collaborated with the Learning in Science Group of the Cyprus University and the IT Advisors Group of the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Cultural for the implementation of many research projects in primary classrooms, including science fairs and the learning and teaching with the use of new technologies.    

In 2005-06 she applied the interactive platform STOCHASMOS in primary science classrooms and presented the teaching and learning implications of adopting the platform to the Fifth Conference of the Users of New Technologies, at the University of Cyprus.   She is currently participating in the research group “coReflect”, with an aim to further investigate the use of STOCHASMOS in teaching environments.

Constantinos Phanis

Biology teacher and coordinator of Ecology and Young Reporters for the Environment in Cypriot public secondary schools

Constantinos Phanis is currently a Biology teacher in a public secondary school.  Constantinos has a Ph.D. in molecular biology (biological control of pests) from Imperial College London University. He has experience in various molecular biology techniques using viruses that have considerable commercial interest because they can be used as biological agents for the control of moths that harm crop productivity.

He is also a holder of a B.Sc. in Microbiology also from Imperial College. He has taught AS and A2 Biology (English syllabus Edexcel Board) at a selective school for eight years. He has completed a teaching course in Greek Biology. For the past two years he was chosen to lead a team of Cypriot students in the European Science Olympiad. This year he set the Ecology exam paper for the European Science Olympiad which took place in Cyprus in May 2008. He is mainly interested in the application of new technologies for improving instructional practices in Biology.

Alexia Sevastidou holds a Master’s degree in Educational Technology from New York University and a Master’s degree in Learning in Science from the University of Cyprus. She has worked both as a primary school teacher and in preservice and in – service teacher training in implementing ICT in the curriculum.  She has also participated in developing technology enhanced learning materials for teaching science in primary school. She is currently working as a teacher in primary education and she is a PhD student in the field of Learning in Science at the University of Cyprus.

Through her participation in CoReflect, she expects to apply her experiences as a school teacher and her knowledge in internet environments into developing new learning environments that deal with current socio-scientific issues, as well as to broaden her understanding in the field through the interaction with the international group of teachers and experts who participate in the program.
